World's Only Corn Palace
Murals

2009 Corn Palace Theme and Mural Drawings
“Tourism plays such a major role in the City of Mitchell and the World’s Only Corn Palace is known as
one of the great attractions across the United States. It is
fitting for the Corn Palace Festival Committee to select America’s
Destinations as this year’s theme,” Corn Palace
Director Mark A. Schilling.
Each year the
exterior panels of the Corn
Palace are decorated
with locally grown corn. The complete process of changing the rye, dock,
corn and milo starts in June when the rye and
dock are torn off and replaced. The corn murals are replaced
beginning in late August with an anticipated completion date at the end of
September. A different theme is chosen each year, and murals are designed
to reflect the selected theme. Cherie Ramsdell is
the current panel designer. Ramsdell is an
Assistant Professor of Art at Dakota
Wesleyan University.
While there are many great destinations in
America the Corn Palace Festival Committee selected panels depicting such
sites as Washington D.C., the Statue of Liberty, the Space Needle in
Seattle, the Golden Gate Bridge, St. Louis Arch, the Alamo and Davy
Crockett, Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, the
Kennedy Space Center and South Dakota’s great Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse
Monument and the Corn Palace.
