Patrol Branch
The Patrol branch is the largest branch in the Police Division. The staff includes four Patrol Sergeants and 16 Patrol Officers. Sergeants are responsible for all activity and calls during their assigned shift.

Officers with the Mitchell Police Division are offered extensive, on-going training that includes accident investigation, traffic enforcement, general criminal investigation, drug interdiction and civil matters to name a few.

The Patrol branch also consists of a number of specialized functions. These include Boat, Emergency Response Unit (ERU), DARE, Bike and Field Training. Although officers generally patrol in marked police vehicles, they may also be in a boat, on a bike or on foot.

There are four officers on patrol 24 hours per day. In addition, officers provide security to the community for special City functions such as sporting events, dances held at the Corn Palace, Stampede Rodeo, and Corn Palace Festival.

Investigative Branch:
The Investigative branch includes one Lieutenant, and five investigators. This branch is responsible for the criminal investigations of all major crimes within the City Of Mitchell.  Investigators receive specialized training in crime scene investigation, fingerprinting, conducting interviews, photography, surveillance techniques and many other areas.

Mitchell Police Investigators are assigned to the investigative unit from the Patrol branch.  One of the investigators is assigned to the James Valley Drug Task Force as a full time drug investigator for a three county area that includes Davison County, Hanson County, Sanborn County and the City of Mitchell.
